The Slam Society is running its first event of the spring semester 4pm–7:30pm on Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the Harbor Gallery on the first floor of McCormack Hall:
Open mic!
Feature from guest poet Ross Gay!
Competitive poetry slam!
The event on February 9 will begin shortly after 4pm with a 45 minute-long open mic, where performers are allotted a 5-minute time slot. Spots in the open mic are reserved on a "first-come first-serve" basis. Find the sign-up sheets at the entrance of the Harbor Gallery or circulating the crowd. Musical performances are discouraged on the open mic, and any props, costumes, or musical accompaniment are explicitly prohibited for competitors in the slam. After the open mic, Ross Gay will perform:
Gay's newest collection, "Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude" was a finalist this year for the National Book Award in the category of poetry. He previously received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference, and currently teaches at Indiana University.

—Francine J. Harris, "Harriet," a Poetry Blog at the Poetry Foundation.
