The HPR has incubated some of the best political minds in America. Alumni of the magazine include the 45th Vice President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Al Gore, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne, Bloomberg View columnist Jonathan Alter, U.S. Associate Attorney General Tony West, Politico reporter Alex Burns, and Earth Institute director Jeffrey Sachs.
Recently, HPR writers have won the National Press Club Award for Outstanding College Political Writing. In the past five years, HPR staff members have won the Rhodes, Fulbright, Marshall, and Truman Scholarships – and earned selection to the USA Today Academic All-American Team.
One of the hallmarks of the HPR is its commitment to in-depth interviews with the people who shape politics. In recent years, the HPR has featured interviews with leaders such as Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Christopher Hitchens.
