Join us and our guest lecturer Assistant Professor of Spanish and Linguistics, Daniel Erker and his research. Professor Erker is the director of The Spanish in Boston Project. This project aims to describe and understand how Spanish is used in the Greater Boston Area.

Professor Erker:
The Spanish in Boston Project – My research team and I are in the initial stages of developing a large-scale corpus of spoken Spanish, to be collected in the greater Boston area and to be analyzed within the context of variationist sociolinguistics (and made publicly available to language scholars). This research, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, examines a range of variable linguistic phenomena in order to assess the possibility that language and dialect contact are promoting the emergence of a Boston Spanish speech community. At present, the research team has interviewed 163 Bostonians with origins in one of 15 Latin American nations.
